COUNTRY NEWS.

(From Our Special Correspondents.)

OXFORD.

In spite of -the dry weather ami many nor'-westers, this district is said '.by visitors to be' one of the greenest in Canterbury. For the most part, lambs and, crops are looking well, anil even the cows are milking well, although tests are low. Mr Cleeve, of View Hill, is said to have been sending to the.., creamery over seven hundred pounds of .milk-from seventeen cows.

'Political and No-license matters are quiet, but the various .partiesai'e.' not. quite idle. x Mr Hammond spoke'-here in favour of prohibition and had a fair attendance, although the night was wet. Mr Stewart followed with "Prohibition FaJlacies.'' But, though the night was fine, his audience was small. Mr Banks visited West Oxford last week. His meeting had not been at all well advertised and there was only a small attendance. He was listened to with keen attention and received a vote of thanks.

Mv .Jones's meeting 011 November 19 at West Oxford was .1 very satisfactory one. About 00 ladies and gentlemen were present, and were evidently impressed by the speaker's thorough grasp of everything political. A number of questions were asked and satisfactorily answered. It was generally felt that though his statements were severe on the Liberal Party they were unanswerable. The readiness and directness of his replies to questions were especially ii'oticei.blc. •

On the 19th- the auctioneering firms operating here held a combined cattle sale. Several hundred head were yarded, ranging from calves to fat bullocks and cows, but 'iiiofct' were stores. Prices were low except for good springers and fat or forward cows and bullocks. Mr J. Wells got up to £8 JO/-,for springers; a fat cow realised £l2 odd, and Ry.de Brothers sold a fine line of forward bullocks at £lO. Most,of the yearlings and 18-months-old stock returned home. Farmers here feel that though it is good to be green at Oxford, it would help prices if the whole of Canterbury received a soaking rain.
