SHEEP-SHEARING CLASSES.
MORE SUPPORT DESIRED. An appeal to sheep-farmers to give practical support to the sheep-shearing classes in connection ( with the Christchurch Technical College, by employing the young men who pass through these classes, was made at to-day's meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Farmers' Union, by Mr A. ,J. Bell. Mr Bell is the union's representative on the Technical College Board of Governors. He pointed out that the young-men who passed through these classes successfully received certificates of competency. While he was not in favour of preference to unionists as a general principle, he thought that sheep-farmers should, wherever possible, give preference of employment to shearers who had competency certificates from the Technical College. Mr Pateliett pointed out that in many cases the smaller sheep-farmers sent their sheep for shearing to central sheds, where the shearing was done by contract. In such cases the farmer would not engage the shearers. It was really a matter for the Sheei>-owners' Union to use its influence. The executive decided to write to the Sheep-owners' Union on the subject.
