COUNTY COUNCILS.

HEATHCOTE. The annual meeting of the Heathcote County Council was held to-day, when there were present: Messrs E. Armstrong, G. K. Burton, G. M. Hall, W. W. P. Scarff, G. Scott, J. Gudsell, F. A. Anderson, and C. Flavell. Mr G. Scott was unanimously elected chairman for the ensuing year.

Mv Scott sincerely thanked the mem- j bers for the confidence that had been placed in him, and stated that he fully ! realised the responsible position to which he had been, elected. He would do all in his power to assist the members to carry out the work in the interest of the ratepayers. During the year the council would have to face a considerable amount of work which the ratepayers were anxious to have carried out. In conclusion, he hoped that every member would cut down ex-penses-as much as possible, and work together for the welfare of the borough as a whole. The grocers of the county forwarded a requisition asking for closing hours similar to those existing in the city. The requisition was certified to by tha I council.

It was decided that the council meet on the second Tuesday in the month at 7.80 p.m. A finance committee was set up, and members consisting of Messrs F.. A. Anderson, C. Flavell, G. M. Hall, and G. K. Burton were elected.

The resident engineer of the Dyer 'a Pass Road wrote stating that he had received a message that the council would contribute half the total amount up to £2OO of all money spent on the Dyer'a Pass Road, including paybents to men put on by himself. He enclosed an account for half the money so far expended, and stated that he would be glad of a cheque as early as possible, so that he could make arrangements to put further work in hand to utilise the balance available. The letter was received.

An account amounting to £9O 11/ was passed for payment.
