A West Coast resident who spends a good deal of time on the river-banks in quest of whitebait had a narraw escape from death in the recent gale. He was seated under a poplar tree waiting for a "bite" when an ominous crackling sound rent the air. He had the presence of mind to throw himself down the bank, and two or three seconds later the tree crashed across the place where lie had been sitting. Whitebait was "off" for some time while the angler collected his shattered nerves.
