The Sun MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1914. MR RUSSELL AND MR SULLIVAN.
Mr G. W. Russell lias a grievance against The Sux. He complains tliat it does not attack Mr D. G. Sullivan, and suggests that The Sun would rather see Mr Sullivan representing Avon than himself. In the first place, The Sun is not laying itself out to attack any particular candidate. Jt., has given longer and fuller .reports of political meetings than any- other Ghristcliurch newspaper, and furnislied-politicaV aspirants with'every of getk ting 1 their views'b&fbre? thfe piiWic; Sun has also endeavoured to be judicial and non-partisan in its comments, and we submit that even an independent newspaper can sharply criticise; wrigglers, twisters, and political contortionists without necessarily betraying party bias. If Mr Russell is feeling sore that, his political inconsistencies have been exposed in The Sun, he does • not explain away , the force of those I criticisms by turning round and calling The Siln a ' ' Massey!'V p'aper. For some time past the } party papers on both sicfes have bpeii sefving. up columns of purely party? comment and electioneering matter, according to the colour of the side they represent. The Sun has beeu content to report the views of candidates and set out the facts fairly and impartially, so that the electors may draw their own conclusions. It intends to continue along these lines, and we have ample evidence that the public appreciates at least one trustworthy source of information 6n cur-, rent polities. As to the question'whether Avon would be bettei- represented in Parliament by Mr Sullivan tliah by Mr Russell, we have no hesitation in saying that it can dispense with either to its advantage, but were the choice restricted to these two> then w6 should advise the electors tq v ; ote for Mr Sullivan, because they know just where he stands on political questions, whereas Mr Russell's principles, like the hue of the chameleon, change under one-s very eyes.
