(Before Mr H; W. Bishop, S.M.) DEINK. Two.male first offenders for drunkenness were each fined 5/-. Another first offender, for having been drunk on the railway station/ was fined .10/-; and still another, for having been helplessly drunk in Moorhouse Avenue this morning, was also fined 10/-, in default 48 hours', imprisonment. Donald Matheson, for a fifth offence of drunkenness, was sentenced" to 14 days' hard labour. BEOKEN OEDEES. George Gracey, for a first breach of his prohibition order, was fined 10/-, in default 48 hours' imprisonment, while John Grey, was dealt with in a similar manner for entering licensed premises. '■' CHEAP TOBACCO. John Herbert Porter, 39 years of age, who appeared on remand, was charged that between August 12 and September 11 he obtained tobacco valued at £1 14/6 from the Farmers' Co-op. Association'by false pretences. Accused pleaded not guilty. The police stated that he was at present in the Hospital, and wanted to call witnesses. . A "remand,was granted till to-morrow week, bail being fixed at £SO. BIG CEEDIT. Doris Beaton, a young married woman 20 years. of age, appeared on remand and was charged that between October 5 and 19 she obtained from the New . Zealand Farmers' Co-op. Association goods valued at £l6 12/11 by means of false pretences. Mr Bishop remembered that last time the girl was .before the court the amount involved was £B3; now it was only £l6. The Chief-Detective said that the charge had been reduced. The, girl had been living a loose life, and it was thought she was a fit subject for a home. Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, on the understanding that she remains in the Salvation Army Home for 12 months. About £4O worth of the goods, which had been recovered, was to be returned. x VALUELESS CHEQUE. Ah old man, 66 years of age, named Charles Geddis, was charged with obtaining £5 by means of a valueless cheque from D. Kelleher on October 31. He admitted the offence. The Chief Detective explained that accused' got the money from the New Zealander Hotel. He had a very bad | record. . ; i The Magistrate sentenced accused to six months' imprisonment, with hard labour. THEFT. Geo. Watson, a young man, was charged that on or about November 6 he stole sleepers valued at £5 at New Brighton, the sleepers being tho property of the Christchurch Tramway Board. Mr Cassidy appeared for the accused, who admitted the offence. The police explained that accused stole 73 sleepers and sold them, spending the money at the races. Accused was fined 60/-, in default oue month's imprisonment, and was ordered to refund £5, the value of the goods; in default a further month's imprisonment. STOLEN JEWELLERY. Ida Cox, 24 years of age, was charged that on or about January 30, she stole three cameo stones valued at £3, the property of Matilda Munday. The young woman admitted the charge. The Chief Detective stated that accused had been working for the complainant as a domestic servant. The jewellery was missed after she left the place. There had been complaints from previous employers, but there was no record against her. She was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, on the understanding that she remained in the Salvation Army Home for six months. MAINTENANCE. Eichard Carey, in arrears in his maintenance of Ellen Carey, was sentenced to one month 's hard labour, the warrant to be suspended provided the arrears are paid off at the rate of 5/- a week. Frederick Edward Willis was ordered to pay 10/- a week for the support of each of his two children.
