FOODSTUFF PRICES ADVANCED.

MELBOURNE, November 17.
Senator Pearce, Minister of Defence, has officially declared that it is better for the country to allow the enemy's subjects to continue in their ordinary occupations.
" The Government has decided to advance prices as follows: —Wheat, from 4/9 to 5/6; flour, 210/- to 237/6; bran, 116/- to 150/-; pollard, 140/- to 150/-.
Senator Pearce has communicated to Rear-Admiral Patey his congratulations on the Sydney's exploit, and has also convoyed Mr Massey's appreciation. SYDNEY, November 16.
The secretary of the Mill Employees' Union states that two big flour mills have closed and others have shortened hands or are closing. , Many men have been rendered idle as the outcome of the priee of flour being fixed'at £9 17/6, at; which figare millers are unwilling to sell. Twelve motor ears have been presented to the Army Mfedical Corps for use as motor ambulances during the war.
