AT OCEAN ISLAND.
LANDING OF TROOPS. GERMANS GIVING TROUBLE,
SYDNEY, November 16,
A steamer from Ocean Island reports that just before she left troops were landed at the request of the British residents to keep the Germans in check. It is alleged that 40 Germans, armed with rifles, marched through the island and threatened to shoot anyone who interfered with their plans.
[Ocean Island is a small island 10 square miles irt area, but is very rich in deposits of phosphates used in making artificial manures. It is part of the Gilbert Islands and lies 52 miles south of the Equator and about 100 miles south-east of' Nauru Island, captured from the Germans a short while since. It belongs, by lease, to the ." Ocean Island Phosphates Company."]
