GERMAN COMMERCIAL MEN FEAR EVENTUAL RUIN
To-day's, cable/ messages indicate that, having repulsed a series of German attacks, the Allies have once more assumed the offensive, and have recaptured several positions previously captured by the enemy. The Russians continue their advance in the east, and it is said that the German colony at Cracow has fled r also that the Austrians will not defend the city, in order to save it from bombardment. Details of an interesting nature are to hand concerning the successful attack on Turkish forts by H.M.S. Duke of Edinburgh, and there is also An interesting comparative statement relative to the naval losses of Germany and England so far. The South African rebels have attempted, by a treacherous use of the white flag, to corner a loyalist force, but the attempt was unavailing, and they were .severely defeated. . It is rumoured that, De Wet has taken General Ilertzog a prisoner, owing to his advice to the rebels to surrender. At the fall of Tsing-tau the victorious Allies took five thousand prisoners and sank a large number of ships. ;r " r ; It is reported that commercial, men in Germany, now realise the collapse of the grand campaign, and that a prolongation of the war will mean entire ruin.
