HOSPITAL LADY VISITORS' ASSOCIATION.

ANNtJAL JMLEETING.

The annual meeting of the above was held at the hospital yesterday afternoon, Mrs Julius (president) in\the chair. There was a large attendance of members.

The twenty-seventh annual report showed that while the number of cases to be relieved during the year showed an increase, the subscriptions showed a decrease. Tw r o years ago the annual subscriptions amounted to £66 4/6, while this year they only reached £44 13/6. Associates were urged to put forth an effort to increase this total. The report further stated that during the year 163 patients bad been sent to the Convalescent Home, at a cost of £225 0/3; several to New Brighton, £5 5/11; those assisted in their own homes, £l6 18/-. Some children were sent to the Children's Convalescent Cottage, and a number received clothing. The Chronic Ward Building Fund was reported as not being in quite as successful a condition as the committee had hoped. A number of things had militated against it, including the strike, the war, and the campaign for the open-air home for children. Last, but not least, the committee had counted on a promised legacy of £IOOO from Mrs Townend, but owiug to the fact that it was not mentioned in her will, there was a change that their expectations would not be fulfilled by her heir. The report stated that the committee hoped that he wiio had received such a large fortune would not grudge this comparatively small amount to help the poor incurables and the building of the Chronic Ward. The fund for this purpose at present amounts to £1650, of which £1135 9/1 is on deposit. While acknowledging the claims which the war has made on the re- ! sources and sympathies of the public, it was hoped that it would not overlook those in our midst who are suffering from incurable illnesses. £ISOO is still required.. The balance-sheet showed receipts amounting to £3BB 2/4, and expenditure totalling £323 8/9, leaving a credit of £64 13/7.

Both report and balance-sheet were adopted unanimously. The following officers and committee were elected: —

•President, Mrs Julius; committee, Mesdames Ehvorthy, Guise, Maude, R. H. Rhodes, Irving, Nicholls, Stedman, G. E. Rhodes, Misses Cardale, Thurston, Neave, and Tripp. Miss Cocks was elected honorary secretary, and Miss Turner nonorary treasurer. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the late secretary, Miss Tripp, who found it impossible to undertake similar duties for the ensuing year. Many eulogistic comments were made concerning the excellent services which she

had rendered to the association, and she was unanimously elected a member of the committee.
