A SANGUINARY ENCOUNTER.
MOSLEM LOYALTY TO BRITAIN.
PETROGRAD, November 14
The Russians are advancing on. Erzerum on three sides. The road was. practically open to within a few miles of the town, where the invaders were confronted by the formidable Devebomn heights, the scene of severe fighting in 1877. The Turks were reinforced from Erzerum and from Trebizond, but the Russians inflicted great losses on them.
A flank attack on the Russian left was caught by a punishing crossfire from mountain artillery, and broken up by infantry charges. Caucasians are now pursuing the Turks in the mountains.
CAIRO, November 15
Leading Moslem religious authorities have issued a proclamation urging Egyptians to maintain a peaceful attitude and shun intrigue. The chief religious Sheiks in the Soudan spontaneously expressed loyalty to the Government, paid a tribute to the beneficence of British rule, and dissociated themselves from Turkey's actions, which they said had alienated the sympathies of the Mohammedan world. '
