LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

! CHRISTCHURCH EAST. " ! To the Editor of THE SUN. | Sir, —It gave me a mild shock last [night to read in The Sun that the I Mayor of the city may become the Liberal candidate for Christchurch East. : I was under the impression that Mr ! Holland was a declared Reformer, and would stand in the interests of the Government if he stood at all. It only shows how easily people may be mistaken, or how astute our worthy Mayor is becoming. Sir Joseph Ward has a nice range of ejioice. Dr Thacker is on the one hand —a sport, three-fifth majority, and general anti-wowser. On the other is the Mayor—Prohibitionist,' bare majority (I suppose) anti-tote, anti-boxing, and three or four other antis. I will, bet anybody a packet of cigarettes that Sir Joseph picks * the Mayor.—-I am, etc., DOUBLE OR QUITS. LABOUR OR LIBERAL. To the Editor of THE SUN. Sir, —The Labour candidates for the Christchurch constituencies —Messrs Whiting, Sullivan, and Hunter —are an amusing trio. It is hard to take their candidature seriously, especially when they all declare that in a no-confidence motion they will support Sir Joseph Ward. Why are they so enthusiastic for Sir Joseph, and at the same .time standing /in opposition to . the ■official nominees of the Liberal Party? If they are going to follow Sir Joseph Ward "pri the most vital issue that can come before, the House —a no-confidenee motion —how can they be an improvement on the-present, representatives? They will have to ieep on voting for the Liberal Party if that party eomes in, and consequently they! must subordinate Labour principles to the exigencies of the Liberal Party.- Instead of dragging Sir Joseph Ward at the chariot wheel of Labour, they will be whipped in at the cart tail of Liberalism. What. Labour wants very-badly and sadly is men who are pledged to principles, not to leaders. Labourites, who are pledged to support the Liberal leader, and at the same time oppose his nominees, are no use to the electorates. —I am, etc., HONESTY.
