The war in Europe is attracting into the field scores of medical men from all parts of the world, some drawn by patriotism, others by the call of humanity, and some, of course, by scientific ambitions. The supply of medical men will certainly not exceed the demand, but American journals say' that doctors from all over the States have been offering their services through the consulates. One of the most distinguished scientists in the field is Dr Alexis Carrel,.the famous surgeon. He is a Frenchman, and he happened to be in, France at the outbreak of war, and, like every other patriotic Frenchman, lie immediately offered his assistance to the Government. Dr Carrel, according to - a new method of patriotism. He has been looking for men who are willing, to give their blood for their country, for healthy, men, that is to say, ready-, to give blood foT transfusion. into the veins of wounded soldiers. 1 Quite a num-' ber of professional men in Paris had been attracted by the-idea, and were offering blood to the hospitals. This is the story as it is told, but,* of course, it may have been elaborated'before it obtained publication.
