LORD ROBERTS'S BIRTHDAY. Prtx.t. AssociationWELLINGTON, September 30. In the Legislative Council this afternoon, the Hon. F. H. D. Bell moved "That the Legislative Council of New Zealand, on the occasion of the eiglityseeond anniversary of,, the birth of Earl Roberts, Colonel-in-Chief of the Forces *of his Majesty's Possessions beyond the Seas, desires to recognise the splendid services which his lordship has rendered to the Empire in the past, and to express its hope that he may be spared for many years to come to command the New Zealand soldiers who are proud to have the privilege of serving under Jiim.'' Mr Bell said he had tried to express in words what the country felt. All Englishmen knew and valued Lord Roberts's services. • The Hon. Captain Baillie (who had served under Lord Eoberts's father), seconded the motion, expressing the honour the Council felt at passing the motion. Since 1857 Lord Roberts's name had been , a household word throughout the Empire. He pointed out that Lord Roberts had foreshadowed what took place in August, The resolution was carried \xnaniniously, and his Excellency the Governor is to be requested to cable the message to Lord Roberts. A similar resolution was passed in the House.
