It is satisfactory to know that the City Council has / not procrastinated with the question of placing the city 's water supply, in, a reasonably safe condition. i The Mayor announced .at last night's meeting of the. council that three additional wells had been sunk, with the result th.atr.the existing supply will be increased by. the substantial amount of half a million gallons. This is an excellent beginning, but, so far as money is available, the council should not rest satisfied - until the scheme is : really : completed. The extra water which has just been obtained •is sufficient only to meet immediate requirements, especially should the • coming summer be ardent and prolonged. The proposals which have been accepted by the council take count of the futiire needs of the c-ity, -wJiQn Christehurch shall have become Greater Christehurch and the suburbs have expanded in proportion. It is a work which, had more foresight and courage been exercised, would have been carried out when provision was first made for a city supply. However, the necessity for some such comprehensive scheme lias now been recognised, and amends are to be made fofr past slackness. The sinking of the three extra wells may be taken as an earnest of the council's sincerity, in the matter; :and its- expedition, .-.even at this ftage, can be heartily commended.
