An amusing incident is reported to have taken place near Westport. The Territorials are on guard along the beach, and manuka scrub grows near to the beach. About midnight the sentry heard footsteps, and at once challenged. He got no reply, and called out: "Who goes there?" There was a movement in the scrub, and the sentry called out: "Speak, or I'll fire." Getting no response, he fired, and there was a heavy thud. He called his mates, and on investigation it was found the sentry had shot a cow. A clergyman in Lawrence, Mass., is noted for his epigrammatic style. In a recent sermon he said, "I have noticed that most men go to church to * close their eyes, and most women to eye their clothes."
