Messrs J. McCombs, M.P., and G. Witty, M.P., arriA r ed from the North, yesterday. Mrs H. H. Carr, sister of Sir James Carroll, died on Tuesday last, after a long illness. Messrs C. Stock, of Sydney, and W. E. Knight, of Haw York are guests at the United Service Hotel. Mr J. B. N orris, secretary of the New Zealand Trotting Association, returned from Wellington this morning.

Sheldon, the American author and prohibition lecturer, who is at present touring New Zealand, spent yesterday in Ashburtbn. He returned to town to-day, and was the guest.of the New Zealand Club at luncheon at 1 p.m. The Bishop of Melanesia (Dr Cecil Wood), Avho arrived from Australia early last week, was to leave Auckland for Norfolk Island and other mission stations to-day in the steamer Southern Cross. Amongst the other passengers will be the Revs. E. J. A. Simmons, A. A. Thomson, F. Ballance, A. Mason, and G. H. Morse, Mr E. Bourne, Misses Child, Coombe, Cooper, Bridges, and Hirst (members of the mission staff), and the Rev. B. G. Fox, who is visiting a brother in the mission. Seaman G. V. Williams, who was killed in the Australian attack on Herbertshohe, was 28 years of age, and a Victorian. He went to sea *as a boy, and became- an able seaman on the Westralia. He served also on the Loongana and the, Paloona. He was well known on the watersides of Sydney and Hobart, as well as in Melbourne. He quitted the sea some time ago, and found employment in Melbourne City Corporation Electric Works. He was a member of the Royal Australian Navy Reserve, and had done more than the four of the five years' service, which was covered by his enlistment. He had one more drill to attend for the completion of his service, when he was ordered on foreign duty. He was one of the best rifle and revolver shots in the brigade, and was generally ..known as a plucky, vigorous, and athletic man.
