BOROUGH COUNCIL FRAUDS.
•■■ i > Press Association. DUNEDIN, September 25. . At the Supreme Court, John Towler Gambling and George Frederick Lyons came up for sentence. Both were formerly clerks in the employ of the Invercargill Borough Council and they had pleaded guilty to six cha'rges of making false entries in the books of accounts. Lyons alsp pleaded guilty to two further charges of failing to account for moneys to his employers. Evidence was given as to Gambling's
mental condition by Dr Hogg, who said the prisoner was looked upon as a simpleton and did not appear to realise the gravity of the situation. He was 65 years of age. The total defalcations were £4O and prisoner had made restitution. Judge Sim said it was an improper thing for .a corporation to put such a man in a position of trust. He ordered the prisoner to come up for sentence when called. Lyons, who was tramways cleric, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. His total defalcations were £27.
