The Canterbury Band of Hope Union's musical and elocutionary contests will open on Monday in the Choral Hall, and will ,be continued for eleven evenings. A varied programme has been prepared, with many improvements on last year's programme. Williams) will take place. At a sitting of the Juvenile ■ Court this morning, before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., two little girls, aged 12 and 1*) years: respectively, were eharged with living with a person convicted of vagrancy. Sub-inspector McKinnon explained that the girls had been before the Court several times previously, but the matter of dealing with them had been adjourned, because the sister of the girjs had promised to take charge of them when she and her husband removed to Hornsby. She had since stated that: she did not feel disposed to take the children, as her husband was not willing that she should, and at any rate she was now in the Hospital undergoing a serious operation, and the children were again with thef father. A woman was looking after the house, but she was practically an imbecile, and not able to look after herself. Evidence as to the circumstances was given by Miss Early on behalf of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children, and by Sergeant Ciarkson. Mr W. Hay ward,, who appeared on behalf of the Catholic Federation, said that the Sisters were willing to take the children into the orphan- . age. He had it from the father and mother that they wished the children to be brought up Catholics. The father of the children, who was in" Court, expressed his wish that the children should be brought up in the religion of the Church of England, and the children were committed to the Receiving Home.
