THE RANFURLY SHIELD. WELLINGTON BEAT TABANAKL Press Association. . , STRATFORD, September 10. The . game between Wellington and Taranaki, particularly in the first spell, wa§ very attractive and full tof iucident. The holders of the Shifelfi were somewhat unfortunate, as lost their captain at the end of the first half t and Young, a forward, had to be replaced half-way through the secoiid spell. ' Taranaki kicked off, and with three minutes gone the first score was regis-' tered, a goal being landed' by Stohr (Taranaki) from a free kick. The yellows were defending, when Stphr, mak : ing a miskick in front of his own goal, Algar rpicked up, a,nd coolly potted " a neat goal-with his left fc/oti A great passing rush of yellow forwards ended in Taylor scoring, and again the Shield was safe. After an interchange of kicks the leather passed right through the black backs, and Fisher was thrown, over eat the corner" flag,"bxit not before he had grounded, Evenson -failed witli the kick, and the score stood at 7- —6, and the Shield had said good-bye to the butter province. Thirty-five" minutes went in the second, spell before there was any alteration in ' the score. Play was about lialf-way, when, fiom the ruck, Moffatt passed to Roberts, and sent on to Algar, who landed a bombshell behind the jrosts . the -enemy's camp. Roberts Secured 'the- ma* jor points (12- —6). Exciting play followed, but there was uo further score.
