BATTLESHIPS AT HELIGOLAND. LIEUTENANT'S GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION. {Received September 4, 8.10 a.m.) LONDON, September 3. A na.val lieutenant, after describing the Heligoland fight, adds:— The German cruiser Mainz was immensely gallant, and when last seen she was absolutely wrecked "below and aloft. Her whole body amidships "was a fuming inferno. She Tiad one gun forward and one aft still spitting forth fury and defiance, like a wild cat mad with its wounds. A - cruiser of the Breslau class recommenced firing, but we did not care v farthing, for, straight ahead of as, in lordly procession, like elephants walking through? a pack of dogs, came H.M.S. Lion, H.M.S. Queen Mary, H.M.S. Invincible, and H.M.S. New Zealand, great, grim, and. uncouth, as if they were some antideluvian monsters. A BAPTISM OP FIRE. NEW ZEALAND WOMEN'S FLAG. WELLINGTON, September 3. The following cable message has been received from- Captain Halsey:— LONDON, Septeriflter 2. "All on board H.M.S. New Zealand congratulate the Dominion on their action at Samoa. Please inform the women of New Zealand that their ensign flew on board during the action off Heligoland."
