THE PANAMA EXPOSITION.

NEW ZEALAND'S COMMISSIONER,

A recent visitor to Christchurch was Mr E. Short, of Parorangi, Feilding, the well-known Romiiev breeder wfio has been appointed by the authorities of the Panama • Exhibition Commissioner of Stock for New Zealand in connection .with the Exposition. Mr Short is to assist the live stock section of the Exposition by encouraging exhibitors from the Dominion both of live stock aud wool. He has been asked to also endeavour to assist the competitions which "it is proposed, to hold,, and one of the most important of these is a shearing competition for shearers from all quarters of the globe. It is proposed t;o send two shearers to represent the Dominion, and the Shearers' Union and the Sheep Farmers' Union have been invited to assist the project financially. A competition of this kind would serve to advertise New Zealand among the sheep men of America considerably just the same as our footballers have done in England in the past.

The Stock Commissioners for the various countries will act as an advisory board of experts in assisting the authorities to manage the immense live stock show which is to be held.

Speaking to a SUN representative, Mr Short said a feature was to be made of the wool exhibits, and with this end in view the Romney Breeders Association were making a collective exhibit of samples of Romney wool, and he thought the other breed societies should do likewise. The Hereford breeders are endeavouring to arrange to send a collective . exhibit of Herefords and the other beef breeds should be represented. An ex-New Zealamler now visiting the Dominion on behalf of an organisation of South American sheep farmers has orders to take back with him from three to four hundred Romney, Lincoln, and Corriedale rams, and he is certain that next year the number required will be three or four thousand. The export of stud stock to America has great possibilities, and in view of the fact it is to be hoped the leading breed societies will be worthily represented at Panama next year. Stock will not have to leave the Dominion before August, 1915.
