RUGBY FOOTBALL.

COLLEGE TOURNAMENT.

WON BY CHRIST'S COLLEGE

The annual tournament between the Rugby football teams of Wanganui Collegiate School, Wellington College, and Christ's College, was concluded on the Christ's College ground j r esterday afternoon. In the earlier matches Christ's College had defeated Wellington by 10 points to 3, and Wanganui had beaten the Wellington boys by 8 points to 3. Yesterday Christ's College defeated Wanganui by 6 points to 3, and so Avon the tournament.

There lias been very little football in the tournament/ at all near the usual standard of secondary schools' Rugby. Yesterday's game was the brightest of the three matches, but it did not provide a very attractive exhibition' of Rugby. It consisted chiefly of close forward play, with very few good passing rushes by the backs. The Wanganui boys were much heavier than their opponents, but the Christ's College boys were more skilful and dashing.

Christ's College had much the better of the first spell. Fairly early in the game some good passing by the Christchurch backs ended in Parson, the right wing three-quarter, . scoring hear the corner. Loudon's attempt to convert failed. Christ's College attacked often and strongly, and on several occasions almost got over the goal-line. In the last few minutes of the spell, with the Christ's College boys attacking in Wanganui's twenty-five, Beattie, Wanganui's left wing three-quarter, threw the ball forward. As the. breach was to the advantage of the opposing side, the referee properly did not stop the play, and Robinson, snapping up the ball, scored an unconverted try. The spell -therefore ended with the score 6—o, in favour of Christ's College. The second spell was more even, the 1 .Wanganui team making better use of its superiority in weight. There was only one score in this spell. A fine run down the touch-line, by Beattie, who got close to the Christ's' College line before he was stopped, threw the defenders out of position, and from the ruck that followed the tackling of Beattie one of tlte Wanganui forwards, Abraham, scored an unconverted try. The game finished with the scores: —Christ's College 6, Wanganui Collegiate School 3. Mr C. Buchanan was the referee. ASHBURTON v. CANTERBURY JUNIORS. A match between the Canterbury junior representative team and a fifteen representing the Ashburton County subunion was played at Ashburton on Thursday afternoon. Several of the Ashburton representatives were junior players, although the team was nominally a senior representative one. The game ended in a draw, neither team scoring. DAVID THOMAS MEMORIAL CUP. Teams representing the Banks and Professions and the Auctioneers of Ashburton played their annual match for the David Thomas Memorial Cup on Thursday afternoon, at Ashburton. The Auctioneers' team won by 6 points to 5.
