THE COURSE OF TRUE LOVE.
SHOT IN THE DARK. Press Association. INVERCARGILL, August 19. A young man named David Cody, a resident of Heddon Bush, was admitted to the hospital yesterday, suffering from, a wound in one of : his hands, caused by a rifle ball. It is stated that the circumstances under which the wound was inflicted are that he was courting the daughter of,, a neighbouring farmer, but the affair was not viewed with favour by the parents of the girl. Love letters* were left by Cody in a secret repository near- the girl's home. The other! night he made his way to the spot, but when a few yards from it he was challenged by someone in the darkness. He took no notice, and a moment afterwards he heard the click of what he took to. a rifle. He continued on his way, and had gone some little distance when, a report rang out and he was struck by a bullet. It is understood that the bullet struck the main bone in his hand, and that it was. only: removed with considerable difficulty. . A young man, the brother of the girl with-whom Cody was corresponding, lias been arrested. - i
