GOLF.

NEW BRIGHTON CHAMPIONSHIP. G. A. Morgan' made sure of his win at .New Brighton; on Saturday when playing H. S. Williams for the championship. He is a really excellent player, and he well deserved to capture the title of the best in the club. The extraordinary thing about Morgan's golfing career is that he only began it about a year ago! At that time he eouldjdig: up divots as large as his hat with:the utter abandon of a novice. He persevered, however, and by dint of much, practice and coaching he began to play the game well. He has a good sjtyle now, and this is in marked contrast to that of Williams, his opponent, who has a rather quaint habit of buckling .one knee up at the wrong time. least, it would be the wrong time' for any ordinary golfer, although it does not seem to affect Williams greatly. Morgan was playing his iron shots like a professional, and more than once he made up for bad tee shots with good play through the green. He was rather weak on the wood, and through this he several times lost or halved holes when he should have won. , Several interesting holes were played, but one of the most interesting was the first of the last nine, when Morgan sent away a hard full drive, which dropped* dead about eight feet from the pin and rolled about three feet further away. Williams followed Morgan with an exactly similar fall, which came to Test just about three feet from Morgan ,'s.' Both had a remote chance for a two, but, remote though it was, Morgan took it and-put down a heart-breaking putt. This was too much' for Williams, whotook three putts to go down. It must be remembered that Williams himself.Jias not been playing golf for much longer than a year. "He had a trying task on Saturday to chase a man round the links, when he was as much as seven down, but he did well nevertheless, and it must be recognised as a great performance that he .won three holes in succession near the end of the game. As he was seven down, this made the finish four up and three. A SEVEKE LOSS. The New Brighton. Golf Club" has lost a valuable member by the death of Mr T. W. Edwards. Mr Edwards- was one of the original members who worked so hard at the initiation of - that body, and pity it is -that he will not now see the consummation of the committee's plans in the enlarging of the course. When the new holes are named the club might remember the ."late Mr Edwards, and,' as has often been ' done at other courses- (notably St.' Andrew's), - call one of the holes by his name.

A CAMBRIDGE WINNER. .Miss Cox, who was staying with Mrs jE. .7. Ross a short while ago, states, in letter to 1). Hood, who coached her during her stay iii Christchurch, that she has improved a great ileal in her .game, anil has succeeded in winning the Cambridge Ladies * Championship. MUNICIPAL COURSES. Not a" great deal-has been heard of municipal golf courses in New Zealand, usually when it is suggested that some of the larger- towns, of the Dominion should build such a course there is a chorus of laughter. Those who ..seem to know most say that a municipal course would never pay; that its upkeep would be a matter of great expense, and that tli ere are too few golfers to justify its existence. They have, besides . these objections, innumerable others, all of which might or might not be valid. Where there are municipal courses at liome they are all a financial success, and from a golfing point of view are excellent. It is not generally "known that the qualifying rounds for the open championship thi3 year were played on the Troon Municipal Course. The following is the card for this course:— " Yds. Yds.
