TURF TOPICS.

BICCABTON TRACK WORK. LITTLE OP INTEREST DONE. Training operations this morning were of a mild character, half to threequarter pace work being generally indulged in. The sand and tan tracks provided fair going, although the former is commencing to get hard underneath. The weather conditions were all that could be desired. To-morrow morning will see many of the candidates doing their final gallops, and a great deal of interesting work is sure to be accomplished. Parley Grove (Wormald) and Parable (Douglas; were given a turn over four nights of the schooling hurdles. The pair galloped at a solid pace throughout, and their fencing was of a creditable order. Altogether their display was--quite satisfactory. Peary is reported to have struck himself while jumping yesterday. He did steady pace work on the sand track this morning, and appeared to be going a trifle short. Captain Jack was restricted to trotting and cantering exercise on the tan track. He also appeared to be favouring his.off foreleg. The following horses were restricted to steady pacing:—Bereola, Glenmore, Fond Memory, Sportsman, The Spaniard, True Blue, Paritutu, Kauroa/, Try Fluke, Chortle, Multiply, Raupani, Svea- j borg, Slogan, Kilmeny, Silver Shield, Troon, Tannhauser, Thrax, Royal Arms, Mount Victoria, Mummer, Kinbombi, Listen, Iliad's Hero, Gnome, Briar Patch, Black Lupin, Amber and White, Admiral Soult, Bransfield, Cheddar, Golden Water, Corrie, Diavolo, Grey King, Morning, Morecambe, Player, Ngatiruanui, Sam Pan, Daylight Bill, Sunbeam, Stevedore, and Ruatangata. As Chortle and Multiply will probably be bracketed on the machine, the combination may start in most demand for the Winter Cup. Both have been responsible for a lot of attractive track work since their arrival at Riccarton, but of the pair. Multiply shapes as the one most likely to see out a solidly run mile. , ■•. ~; ' .;•'.

After his display-of schooling with Paritutu yesterday, The Spaniard has. again come into \favouT for the Grand.National Steeplechase. Had his preparation not been interrupted there is ito doubt but that the northerner would have been a very staunch order, aiyl even as it is he will prob &&!y *>« OU( ? 01E the best backed of the fiohi;-^. So enable delegates to attend the trotting'at on Wednes : day next, the meeting of the- New Zealamf Trotting" will be held at 7.','.{) ia the stead of 1.30 p.m. ~' s ~~ Mr'FivD. Young?, secretary.,of the Otahuhu {Trotting -Club, ;s now in 'town',, and intends being present at next week's fixtures.

The American-bred stallion -Imperious-, -who, is well over thirty, yearn of agf,, is still to be sew. occasionally running i% a •paddock at Ri (-carton. He has quite outlived his usefulness, and rumour has i& that he is now qualifying for the old age pension. The fact of Admiral Wood not being amongst the acceptors for the August Handicap on Monday, gave rise to a suspicion that all was not well with him. As a nfatter of fact the Derby winner is in greatly improved form just at 'and he is an almost certain starter in die King George Handicap on the second day of the meeting. The Geraldine trainer, A. Smith, is bringing Schoolgirl, Dalwhinnie, and Sunshine up for next week's meeting at Addington. w ' ' A. Hendricksen has a good sized team in work just at present, including Childersdale and Chorus Girl, both of whom have been responsible for some attractive track work. Two southern visitors for the Metropolitan Trotting Club's Meeting, in Tommy C and Charming Boy, have been worked at Addington since theif arrival. The former, who looks in improved- form, claims an engagement in the August Handicap on Monday. Mr A. J. Lawrence has'turned farmer, and announces his intention of disposing of all his trotting stock, including the American bred mare Bonny Jenny. The Ashburton pacer Quinaldine, who looks very well at present, has taken very kindly to harness work,, and should give a good account of herself in the Speedway Handicap on Monday next. The withdrawal of Admiral Wood from the big harness event on the first day of the August meeting is sure to be the means of bringing Cameos into great favour for that event. Both horses have been worked at New, Brighton, and it is understood that R. Reay will pilot . Cameos in her engagements. Ashburton stables will be greatly in evidence at next week's meeting of, the Metropolitan Trotting Club. D. Warren, A. Pringle, R. McDonnell, S. Scott, S. Thomas, J. Brankin, and A.' Bright, all have streng teams in work, and most of them are due to put in an appearance to-morrow. Since their arrival at Addington the Southland pair, Sweet Child and Annie K, have improved considerably, and the latter is sure to have a big following for her first day engagement in the Stewards' Handicap. What is probably the last contingent of visiting horses for the National Meeting arrived from Wellington this morning. It included Waiwetu, Parawauui, Merry -Guy, Fashion Plate, Lceso, Gipsy Belle, George, Salzburg, and Grit Lawless. A stable lad of P. Tilley's, named H. Batten, will probably have the mount, on Kaniki in the Winter Cup. The Maniapoto gelding is not an every-day customer, and it is said that young Batten, who looks after him in the stable, can get more out of him than any other horseman. Advice is to hand from Wanganui that C. Price will be unable to ride at the Grand National Meeting. The Peilding trainer, J. Cameron, arrived from the north to-day with Epworth and Waldemar, both of whom are engaged at the National Meeting. The brood mare Ambrosian arrived from Wellington yesterday on a visit to the imported sire Killeroney. The V.A.T.C. Grand National Steeplechase will be decided at Plemington tomorrow. There are ten acceptors, including United Kingdom, Guncap, and Coradjil, the last-named of whom will probably be ridden by L. Hagerty. At nine o'clock this evening accept-

ances and final payments in connection with the Grand National Meeting will be declared.

A rumour was in circulation yesterday that there was a likelihood of the Grand National Meeting being postponed on account of the war. Needless to say, there was not the slightest foundation for such an absurd report. As the result of his recent breakdown Goodwin Park has been blistered and turned out at Fordell. His trainer does not look ©n the mishap as a very serious! one, and has hopes of the gelding being ready to race again in the spring, The name of Try Hard has been claimed for a full sister to Expect in T. F. Quinlivan's stable at Hastings. She is said to show great promise. One of the first of the new season's foals to make its appearance was a filly by Formative from an unnamed daughter of- Gold Reef and Pearl Shot, which was'born at Mr G. P. Donnelly's Orissoge station on August 1. As mentioned in the training notes, Gregory broke a blood vessel while doing a gallop at Riccarton yesterday morning. Little importance was . attached to the mishap.at the time,, and he was attended to in, his box. During the afternoon the gelding became suddenly worse, and was 'dead- in a few minutes, the result probably of internal hemorrhage. Gregory, .was a five-year-old son of St. Ambrose a.ud Neroli, owii'ed and bred by Mr H. A. Knight, of Racecourse Hill. As a racehorse he was not by any means a brilliant per : former, for, during his two seasons ou the turf, he was only successful in the Trial Stakes at the Dunedin Jockey Club's Summer Meeting and the Studholme Stakes at Waimate. Gregory claimed several engagements *at the'i Grand National Meeting, and Ins work during the past few weeks had been of a greatly improved nature. . There has always been some doubt concerning the breeding of Kokiri, the ! supposed , grand-dam of CJynelish. Questioned on the subject, Mr W. E. Bidwill, who bred the Winter Cup candidate, says that his dam Replete is out of a mare ,calied..Koktti, not Kokiri as appears in the Stud Book. Kokiti was by Derringer from Donkey; 11. by Mangle from Grey Donkey by Ciymenutf. TEMPLAB. NATIONAL CANDIDATES. SUMMARY OF REGENT FORM.
