SUMNER NOTES.

BOROUGH COUNCIL BY-ELECTION. The election for the two vacant seats j on the Sumner Borough Council took; place yesterday. The polling was fairly quiet in the! morning, but livened up towards evening. The result was announced shortly after 8 o 'clock by the returning officer. There was a large gathering outside the Council Chambers, and the candidates briefly returned thanks. Mr Whitfield thanked all those who had helped him to head the poll, and promised to work hard for the backblocks of Sumner. MrLaurenson; in returning thanks, also spoke of the needs of various parts. Messrs Kawnsley and Simes returned thanks and congratulated the successful; candidates. The following is the result of the voting: — Sumner Redcliffs booth. booth. The following were amongst the best scores returned : Mrs T. E. Cook, gross 121, handicap 45, net 78; Miss D. Reed, 124, 45, 79; Mrs de Thier, 103, 19, 84; Mrs Hamilton, 107, 23, 84. The third round of the championships will commence next Thursday, August 13. The ladies will play.a medal match on August 13 for a prize presented by Mrs I J. E. Stevens.
