JOY RIDE CASE.

A DILATORY PRISONER. When the court resumed this morning, James William Salt and Thomas Patrick Heade were called upon to answer a charge of having administered a noxious drug to a girl. Salt, who was on bail, did not answer to his name. Mr Donnelly; I appear for the accused, and have had no reasdS. to believe that he would not appear. His Honour: The bail of Salt is now estreated if the Crown demands it. I suppose you do not propose such a measure? Mr Raymond: Not in the meantime, sir. At the suggestion of Mr Raymond another, case was called on. When this had been disposed of there was still no appearance of Salt. His Honour: What is the explanation, Mr Donnelly? Mr Donnelly: I would be very pleased to afford an explanation if I had one, your Honour. I have none. I saw the man yesterday and told hinx either myself or my son would be here to defend him this morning. I had no reason for supposing he would not be here. .If I had known he would not be here I would not be here. It is very annoying. His Honour: lam sure it is. (To Mr Raymond:) What is he? Mr Raymond: He is a taxi cab driver, and lives at 497 Colombo Street. Mr Donnelly: I do not think the police would have much trouble in finding him. Mr Raymond: The only suggestion I have from the police is that, there is a Sydney boat leaving Wellington to-day. His Honour: In the meantime he is keeping the court. The court adjourned till midday in order,to give the accused an opportunity to appear. ,
