The cargo steamer Star of India, which arrived at Auckland the other day from London and Australian- ports, encountered several large icebergs When within a few days' steam of Melbourne. The Star of India left the Home port on May 31, and met with fine weather until after passing the Cape of Good Hopt on June 20. "While sieaming through the Southern Ocean the vessel encountered heavy westerly and south-westerly gales, which are usually met with in these latitudes. As the steamer neared the South Australian coast the weather was very cold, indicating the near approach of ice. On the morning of Friday, July 3, a huge iceberg was sighted, towering fully 160 ft above the sea, and being fully a mile in circumference. The berg was passed within a range of four miles, and presented a magnificent sight to those on the steamer.. Three more bergs, were subsequently sighted at a distance. As an immigrant ships was following close behind the Star Of India, wireless messages were sent out to warn her ,of the danger. The New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Ruapehu, now discharging at Wellington, is expected to leave on Friday for Lytfeltoa to put out the balance of her cargo from London| on which being completed she will Commence loading for West of England ports on behalf of the Federal and Shire Line.
