SAVED BY A BET.
Few men have had such luck as that which befel Eaphael Lassare, when, by a turn of the wheel of fortune, he won £2OO, which enabled him to avoid prison for embezzlement. Lassare is an ex-non-commissioued officer of the Colonial" Infantry, with eighteen campaigns to his credit. He was employed in an insurance office. A week previous he received £l6O to pay out, but he lost £l2O of. it at the Longchamps races. He went to the St. Ouen races with the remaining . £4O, and plunged for a double event. While he was wandering about the enclosure he was arrested and brought before the police. *'What have you idone with the money that was entrusted to you?" asked the commissary. "1 have lost it by gambling," cried Lassare, bursting into tears; - At that moment the newsboys outside cried the racing paper, '' Paris Sport.'' A copy was bought. The : double event had succeeded, and he had £2OO. Lassare offered to refund the money, and gave a pledge never to bet again. His employers .thereupon thought that he had been taught a lesson, and said they did not press the charge.
