SUNDAY CONCERTS.

ONCE AGAIN.

BEFORE THE CITY COUNCIL.

The old question of Sunday concerts came before the City Council last evening, and was once more thrown out by a majority of the City Fathers.

The Woolston Band applied fox permission to - give sacred concerts in the theatre on Sunday evenings, and take silver collections at the door. Whilst, the organ recitals appealed to many people, band concerts were equally pleasing, and should be put on the same footing. The band had no moneymaking idea in hand, but would hand over any surplus over expenses to any charity fund. Cr Otley moved that the application be granted for a year. He could not sec any reason why the council should decline the application. .<As long as the council held Sunday organ recitals, any band or other organisation should have the same privilege. Cr Hunter seconded the motion, and eulogised the Woolston Band for its liberality in assisting any good object. Cr Cooper also supported the motion. He said that a number of people who were not "taken up" with the organ recitals would like to go to the band concerts. The weak spot was that the council would not know where to draw the line, and would have to grant permission to all the bands. (Crs: Hear, hear.) .

Cr Williams, said that Christchurch .was well provided with music on Sunday evenings. He could not for the life of him see why the Woolston Band should rent a theatre, and giy,e the proceeds of their concert to charity. Why could they not give a concert in the Park in the afternoon.

Cr Cooper: They do so. The motion was lost by 10 votes to 6, Cr Otley: It is a monopoly. (Laugh ter.)
