IN THE NEW HEBRIDES.
BRITAIN AND FRANCE. A FRACAS AND AN ENQUIRY. By Cable. — Press Association. — Copyright. (Received August 4, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 4. A report from the New Hebrides states that a British official is enquiring into the trouble wkicju has arisen regarding the alleged attempt of the French officials to invade their territory. A New Zealander, a trader and storekeeper at Villa, stated that French officials sent a posse of police to pull down a fence. Scuffling followed, and the French Lieutenant of Police ordered a number of Britishers to be arrested. The police did not obey the order.
Tlfe British Resident was informed and ordered the French to desist their attempts to make any inroad pending an enquiry.
Feeling on the matter runs high.
