NOTES. The auxiliary schooner Huia commenced loading explosives at Auckland on Monday for Wellington, Now Plymouth, Westport, and Greymouth. At the request of the Explosives Department the Huia is having her engines converted to burn kerosene instead of benzine. Present anticipations are that the New Zealand Shipping Company's Ruapehu will complete discharge of the local portion of her London cargo by Thursday or Friday next, says the Wellington "Post." She then sails for Lyttelton to put out the remainder. From London via Auckland the Shaw, SaviH, and Albion Company's steamer Waimnna arrived at Wellington yesterday morning. On completion of the discharge of the local portion of her cargo the. vessel is to sail to-morrow for Bluff to land the balance. The Wahine, which was the ferry steamer from Wellington this morning, -was an hour later than usual in reaching Lyttelton, not getting alongside the wharf until 8 o'clock. She enoeuntered an adverse southerly soon 'after coming out" of Wellington. To-morrow or Thursday the New Zealand Shipping Company's Or&ri is expected to arrive from London from Dunedin. She sails on Sunday for Trmaru to complete discharge "and will afterwards commence homeward loading. The Kew Zealand Shipping Company s liner Otaki; which loaded for West of England ports under-charter to the, Federal and Shire Line, left Lyttelton on Saturday for Bluff to fill up.:-'. She took the following cargo from this port:—For Liverpool: 3802, carcases of frozen' meat, 35 quarters of beef, land 945 sacks of oats. For Glasgow: 113 I bags of beef, '55 bags of peas, 22 bales of fwool, 5 drums of glycerine, and 53 packages of sundries. For Avonmouth: 8609 carcases i of frozen meat, 500 boxes of butter, and 3424; 1 sacks, of peas. The following cargo was also loaded for London: —185 casks <sf pelts, 89 casks of tallow, 1002 bales of wool, 800, sacks of oats, 600 sacks af wheat, 306 sacks ci peas, 100 cases of casings, ; 20 cases of. margarine, and one package of 'sundries. , TERMS AND THEIR MEANING. Very few people know the origin of phrases which are used in the " mercantile; marine, and some of -which are explained; in the "Nautical ■ Magazine." How many, for Instance, could explain what, "dog, watch" means? It is evidently a corruption, of the "dodge watch",instituted to ensure as every sailor change -of the : daily routine; and to prevent monotony and the same men being on watch at the same hours on each and every day. "Davy Jones," strangely enough, has nothing Celtic about it; the original "Duffy Jonah's locker." Duffy is a darkey's name in West Indies for a spirit or ghost, Jonah evidently, referring to the prophet. The French word "jour," day, is responsible for jury mast, which is rigged only temporarily ,in the hope that it may be only required for one day. The "sheet anchor" should really change" its vowels, and be expressed as the "shoot anchor," on account of its great weight, which aids it in cases of emergency to "shote" out.
