A fairly well attended meeting was held to-night for the purpose of farming a Moderate League in connection with the liquor question. The chairman, Mr A. A. S. Menteath, said that the object of the meeting was to form a true temperance league. - They were heartily against excess in the use of alcoholic liquor and were also against the proposal to use coercive measures against the private opinions of individuals. They were entitled to be called the only temperance party. similar temperance party in the Old Xand had done a great deal of good, but that had seemingly ceased to exist. The so-called temperance party here had become tyrannous and must be resisted. It was decided to establish the league, whose objects should be to safeguard the interests of the general public affected in all matters relating to the licensing laws and their administration and the conduct of the trade! A provisional committee was elected, consisting of Messrs A. A. S. Menteath, J. B. Haft-court, W. E. Pearson, J. H. Owen, L. H. Brodrick, W. Perry, and W. G. Talbot. The committee has power to add to its number. Mr A. A. S. Menteath was elected president for the ensuing year.
