Crown Pearl was scratched for the C.J.C. Winter Cup at 1.15 p.m. to-day. Owing to the rumour that the bluegum peat is causing trouble in the Akaroa district, Mr W. J. Courtier, Government Orchard Instructor, has been instructed to look into the matter. If in his opinion it seems advisable, a consignment of ladybirds will be forwarded to the district.

Provision is being made at the Canterbury College Hall to increase the seating accommodation for the townplanning lecture to-night. A temporary platform is being erected at the end of the building, facing Worcester Street, instead of making use of the ordinary platform. By this means about oo*o more people can be accommodated, permitting of a total of 800.

It has been said that there is a Providence which takes care of drunken men and little children. Further evidence of this- was given last week. An engine was shunting several trucks on Waterloo Quay, Wellington, and was running down one line, when the shunter noticed a man lying across the rails. On examination he was found to be almost helplessly drunk, and it is considered that he had a remarkable escape from death. The death occurred at the hospital at 8.20 this morning of Charles Teear, a butcher living at 7 Wavcrley Street, Sydenham, and working for Chas. Were, Ken., butcher, Fitzgerald Avenue. On June 17 Teear was trimming fat when a bone was run into his hand, bloodpoisoning resulting. He was not admitted to the hospital until Juue 27, and appeared to be making satisfactory progress for some time, but death resulted to-day. An inquest will probably beheld. There was a large attendance at the students' "at home" and exhibition of work at the School of Art on Saturday evening.
