Mr A. W. Rutherford, jun., of Brookdale, arrived in Christchurch last night. Mr O. B. Foster, of Manchester, arrived from the north this,morning, and is staying at Warner's Hotel. The Duke of Aosta, brother of King Victor Emanuel of Italy, is in a critical condition owing to an attack of fever. Mr H. H. M'Nelly, representing the Reform Party, left to-day to attend the conference to be held in Wellington. /Sir Charles Bowen, Speaker of the Legislative Council, Sir George M'Lean, and Sir George Clifford left for Wellington last night.
The Mayor (Mr Holland) is attending the Municipal Conference in Wellingt9n at present, and expects to return on Friday.
Mr C. Jewell, of Oamaru, and Mr J. Coutts, of Auckland, are recent arrivals in town who are staying at the United Service Hotel.
Mr C. G. Ogilvie, of Hobart, who was appointed manager of the Union Bank of Australia, vice Mr Bryant, took up Ms new duties to-day.
Mr*R. S. Thompson, A.M.1.C.E., lately assistant engineer to the Otago Harbour Board, Has been appointed resident engineer to the Patea* Harbour Board.
Messrs A. R. Button, W. H. P. Barber (Wellington), and J.Simpson (Onehunga) arrived in Christchurch this morning, and are'staying at the Clarendon Hotel. . - - v •
A Press Association telegram from Timaru states that Mr P. W. Hutton, a very old resident and principal of the bookselling firm, died to-day. He landed from Scotland in Duiiedin in 1801 and came, to Timaru in 1865. He lias beenin frail health for ,two years.
Among the passengers to Wellington by the Wahine last night were Mr Hurst Seager, Mr Thomas Brown, JMr W. Belcher (secretary- of the Seamen's and Firemen's Federation), Mr W.\ F. M. Buckley, Mr G. L. Stead, and Mr H. G. Livingstone.
