THE CANTERBURY CLUB.
The team to represent the Canterbury Chess Club in the match with Oamaru, to be commenced on Saturday next, is as follows: —Board 1, E. H. Severne (captain); 2, H. J. Nightingale; 3, J. Kennedy; 4, H. Kennedy; 5, W. S. King; 6, F. H. Cumberworth; 7, F. Woodford; 8, W. H. Joyce; 9, T. Hawkins; 10, H. Gourley; 11, E. A. Joseph; 12, H. E. Plimsoll. Emergencies: W. L. Chrvstall and W. H. Messenger. Umpire: C. H. Black.
The major tourney has- not yet advanced far enough to indicate the final result. Mr Cumberworth, with three wins and no losses, is in the lead, with MiKennedy half a point behind. The minor tourney, with a field, of twelve competitors, has commenced. The players have to complete at least six games by the end of August, and the tourney will commence on September 30.
On Saturday evening Mr R. LovellSmith defeated Mr Joyce in the first game for rung 6 on the club ladder. Mr Hawkins (rung 8) has given notice to challenge the loser of this match for rung 7. '
