The Maheno, which leaves Wellington today for Sydney, is under the command of Captain D. M'Lean, who has associated with him the following officers:—Mr F. W. Jackson (chief), Mr J. Briscoe (second), and Mr T. Bowling (third). Mr C. Mitchelson is still chief steward, and Mr F. Bracey second. In continuation of her loading programme, the lonic left Lyttelton for Wellington yesterday afternoon. She is fixed to leave the northern port for London, via ports, ne*t Thursday. NEW C. AND D. LINER. The new Commonwealth and Dominion 1 liner Star of England, which is due in New Zealand in the course of a day or so, is a sister ship to the Star of Victoria, and is of* the shelter-deck type, 516 ft in length, with a gross tonnage of over 90Q0 tons. She has been built under special survey for the highest class in Lloyd's, complies with the Board of Trade requirements for a first-class passenger and cargo steamer, and will be a valuable addition to the fleet for the trade betweeQ Great Britain and the Australian and New Zealand colonies. The upper 'tween deck spaces are" designed and constructed so that they can be readily adapted for the accommodation of about 900 third class passengers. • The equipment of the vessel includes an installation of Rich's system of fire detection, by means of which an outbreak of fire in any of cargo spaces is indicated in the chartroom and can be immediately dealt with by the officer on watch; also an installation of wireless telegraphy and submarine signalling, while the lifeboat accommodation is in excess of. the Board of Trade requirements, the boats being placed under Wei in davits,' by which they can be rapidly swung but and lowered by one man at each boat. The cargo space is divided into six holds, four of these being insulated for carrying chilled and frozen meat cargoes, while a portion of the after 'tween deck space is fitted for the reception of perishable stores and dairy - produce. In conjunction with these insulated spaces an extensive plant of refrigerating machinery has been arranged. The propelling machinery consists of two sets of triple-expansion engines, with the necessary auxiliaries, supplied with steam from three steel boilers working tinder forced draught.
