COURT BUSINESS.
FIGURES FOR THE QUARTER. The following is a summary of tlie business clone at the Clnistchurch Magistrate's Court for the quarter ending June 30: — Thirty-six civil sittings were held, and 72 criminal sittings, five of which latter were presided over by justices of the peace. Six hundred and twentyseven cases were heard by the magistrates, the aggregate amount sued for being £16,286 10/7, and the amount recovered £9745 3/9. One hundred and thirty-eight applications were heard in Court of Chambers, and orders made on other than judgment summonses totalled 126. One thousand two hundred and thirty-six plaints were entered, 144 distress warrants issued, and 140 judgment summonses issued, on which latter 49 orders were made. Eighteen warrants of committal were issued, and 931 summonses and other processes served by the bailiffs, in addition to 230 served over a distance of two miles. The bailiffs also executed. 58 distress warrants, and 14 warrants of committal. Civil fees paid in stamps amounted to £BB 10/-, licensing fees £73 17/-. In criminal cases, 1788 males and 221 females were taken into custody, and the amount of fees was £174 6/2, fines £725 2/-. The old age pension returns show that 201 claims were granted, and 19 refused. There were 496 renewals granted, and none was refused. Ten widows' claims were granted, and 22 widows' pensions renewed.
