VICTORIA HOUSE MUTUAL AID SOCIETY.
ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS.
The annual meeting of the Victoria House Mutual Aid Society was held on Wednesday night, in the waiting room of the warehouse, when there was a.fairattendance of members and officers of the society.
The president (Mr F. Hope) wa? in the chair, and presented the annual report and balance-sheet for the year, which showed that the society is well supported bv the employees, there being 330 members on the roll. The total amount subscribed by members was £ll4 16/3, which was increased by a similar sum very generously donated by the company as a, subsidy pn the £ for £" principle. It was stated that during the lifetime of the society (15 years) no less a sum than about £2OOO had been voluntarily. donate?! by Messrs W. Strange and Co. to the funds of the society.
The total amount received for the year (including credit balance of £264 8/3 from last year's receipts) Avas £505 (i/8, and gratuities to the amount of £l7l 5/- had been voted to sick members.
After all expenses in connection with' the society had been paid there remained a credit balance of £321 4/2 to be carried forward to next year's account. Tiie library account was also in a very satisfactory condition, there having been £lB 6/9 spent in the purchase of books and magazines during the year, leaving a credit balance in hand of £8 2/4, with an additional reserve fund of £3O, bringing in £1 10/i nterest each year. •
The total balance to the credit of the society was £359 6/6, which was considered very satisfactory to all concerned.
On the : motion of the president, seconded by Mr J. A. Clarke, the report antt balance-sheet was unanimously adopted, several members commenting in eulogistic terms on the very liberal way in which the company had treated the society, .and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the company, and to the general manager, Mr H. H. Smith, for his practical sympathy and generosity during the 15 years of the society's existence. A special vote of thanks was also accorded to the honorary auditor, Mr E. H. Wyles, for his able assistance ip auditing the books and accounts. The' retiring officers were all re-elected, and a very hearty vote of thanks was tendered them, with a special vote of commendation to those who had been instrumental in . promoting the picnic, which was such a great success this year. , A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded one of the most harmonious and interesting gatherings ever held by the society.
