Last night the Mayor of Lyttelton, Mr J. E. Webb, in his statement to the council, referred to the recent sad disaster to the Empress of Ireland in the St. Lawrence River. The Mayor said the disaster was much to be deplored, and all deeply regretted the occurrence. Mr Webb also mentioned the sudden and sad deaths of Mr Francis Bradley at Charteris Bay, and also that of an old servant, Mr Nicholas Davey. He moved that the council's sympathy be recorded on the minutes, and that letters of condolence be forwarded to the relatives of Messrs Bradley and Davey The motion was carried, those present standing.
