CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting ©f tlbd council was held yesterday aftetnofcn, the president, Mr E. G. Staveley, in tee chair.

! The Importers' Committee reported that they had reconsidered the subject matter of the letter from the Department of Trade and Customs referring to import entries, and considered it advisvisable for statistical purposes -that tihe new regulation regarding the insfertton in the Customs entries of the country ; of origin of goods imported into thie Dominion should be carried out.

The Dunedin Chamber of Commence advised the arrival of Mr G. T. Milne, Australian Trade Commissioner. The president referred to this matter at the quarterly meeting.

An invitation had been received, from the Wellington Chamber of Commerce for the president to attend their annual meeting, but unfortunately he /was unable to do so. '

The Department of Customs asked if the Chamber would ascertain the general feeling of merchants-as to whether it was desirable in tlfe interests of all concerned to permit the export of inferior tow. It was thought that as there were many disadvantages in sending away low grade tow, the matter should remain as it is, the graders having power to refuse to let the article go out of the Dominion merely from the condition of the tow.

The Department of Commerce wrote further in reference to the request by the British Empire League to be supplied with information of general commercial interest, considering that the best course for the league to adopt would be to apply to the Home Board of Trade, whose commissioner in New Zea-' land was in possession of just such information as the league required.

Mr Gilbert Anderson wrote that he had been in communication with . the Permanent Committee of the 6th International Congress of Chambers of Commerce to be held in Paris, which he' would attend. He also reported that he had attended a meeting of the British Imperial Council of Commerce and forwarded copy of the .agenda paper and rules'in regard to finances and congress.

He stated that the Ninth Congress of the Imperial Chambers of Commerce would be held in Toronto on September 20, 1915, and he would be pleased to represent the chamber. ■ It was decided to thank Mr Anderson very heartily for the interest he has taken- on the chamber's behalf.

The Oil Exchange, London, forward■g.; particulars of their objects, and offered to enrol the chamber amongst the original members. The letter was received.

The Superintendent of Telegraphs expressed his thanks for the kind remarks made by the president and members of the chamber at the recent quarterly meeting, with regard to the work performed by the telephone operators.
