Mr John Fuller, jun., writing f*om San Francisco, where he has gone seeking rest to his nerves, states that the. sea trip has proved most beneficial. He ran across a copy of THE SUN in the gay city.

At the meeting of the Sumner Borough Council last evening the Town Clerk reported that during the past four weeks building permits to the value of £1521 had been issued, making a total of ,£29s£f since April 1, 1914. A meeting of contributing trades unions was held last evening to elect representatives to the Board of Governors of the Canterbury Technical College. The following were elected: — Messrs W. Bell, W. IV Cooper, and H. R. Kusbridge. At the Bromley School this morning the pupils were assembled and addressed by the head teacher, and Mr H. Huggins, chairman of the School Committee. After marching past and saluting - the flag in honour of the King's birthday, they were dismissed for the day. At a meeting of the committee of the Methodist Choir Union, held on June 1, it was decided to give a choral service festival in August, the festival to consist of anthems, hymns, duets, and quartettes. Also to render Handel's "Messiah" in December, and in February next for the Methodist Conference Mendelssohn's "St. Paul" will be given. United practices will commence at an early date.

At a meeting of the Sumner Borough Council, held last evening, the town clerk reported regarding the hours the sun had been on duty during"" the month of May. The maximum sunshine was on the sth, when its rays were seen fqr 9 hours 20 minutes; there had been over eight hours of sunshine on the sth, 6th, 12tti, 25th, 26th, and 31st, while on three days the orb has been absolutely off duty. The total sunshine recorded was 141 hours 40 minutes.

. The third annual meeting of the Young Women's National • Prohibition Guild was held in the W,C.T.U. on Monday evening. Mrs Joseph Wilson presided. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted, and an address was given by Mrs A. Toombes on women's influence. The following were elected officers for the ensuing year:—President, Mrs Joseph Wilson; vice-presi-dents, Mrs Whiteley. and Miss E. Wilson; hon. secretary and treasurer, Miss Eldridge.
