Mr G. L. Rutherford, of Mendip Hills, is staying at Warner's Hotel. Mr F. J. Miller, of Wellington, is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. Lady Ward was amongst the passengers from Wellington by the ferry steamer this . morning. Captain Pryde arrived from the north by the Wahine to-day, and joins the Kittawa as master.
A: Press Association telegram states that Mr G. Hogben, the Inspector-Gene-ral of Schools, will retire on superannuation shortly. Amongst the visitors to Christchurch who are staying at Warner's Hotel are Major and Mrs Campbell, of England, and Lady Campbell, of Cheviot. The Hon. James Allen, Minister of Finance and of Defence, left for Wellington by the ferry steamer last evening.
Mr and Mrs S. M. Vaughan, of North Canterbury, returned to New Zealand by the Rotorua, which arrived in Wellington yesterday. Mr and Mrs Vaughan have been in England for about two years.
I Colonel Smyth will leave for Wellington on Thursday evening, on his way to England. Colonel Chaffey, V.D.", has taken up Colonel Smyth's duties as officer commanding the Canterbury military district. The Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes, Post-master-General, arrived this morning from Wellington. To-morrow morning Mr Rhodes, who is Colonel-Commanding the Canterbury Mounted Infantry Brigade, will attend the King's Birthday parade at Hagley Park. In the afternoon he will open the King George Y. Memorial Hospital for Consumptives at the Cashmere Hills Sanatorium. On June 10, Mr Rhodes will turn the first sod of the Culver den-Waiau railway, and two days later he will open the new public hall at Duvauchelles. Captain Gibbon, of the Royal Irish Fusiliers, and Captain C. R. Macdonald; of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, arrived in Wellington yesterday by the. Rotorua, from London. Captain Gibbon succeeds Lieutenant-Colonel Cochrane (who has gone to England) as director of military operations, while Captain Macdonald has been appointed Staff Officer for the Auckland military district, in succession to Lieu-tenant-Colonel Braithwaite, who becomes Chief of the General Staff.
