SUMNER NOTES.
On Tuesday evening, the local picture company gave the first of two benefit programmes, in aid of the Borougk school funds, the Hall being comfortably filled.; During the evening, Mr. D. Lumsden, chairman of the. school committee, thaiiked the audience for ttoeiir attendance and ■ explained that the" proceeds would be devoted to'the libraryand prize funds. The next programme will be given on Tuesday next, June 2. On Friday a party of Sumner ladies and gentlemen belonging to the local branch, paid a visit to the Seamen's Institute, Lyttelton, being met at the Port by the Mayoress, Mrs Webb and Mesdames Guthrie and Newall. The party were shown over the buildings, by the superintendent, Mr Booth, and afterwards entertained at tea. A concert was. held in the evening and was enjoyed by the visitors. Before leaving Mrs Smithson, Mayoress of Sumner, thanked Mr Booth on behalf of the party for a most enjoyable evening."
The sunshine recorder on Clifton Hill recorded 40 hours 55 minutes of sunshine for the week ending Monday, May 25, as against 20 hours 50 mins. for the previous week. On May 22, there was no sunshine recorded, whilst on May 25 and 26, over 9 hours were recorded each day. Mr and Mrs E. Or. Wood, of the Esplanade, intend leaving on Tuesday next; on a~ tour of the North Island, and thence across to Australia. They expect to be away from Sumner for about two months. / . •
