SUMNER NOTES.

Among the many improvements instituted by the present council has been the .building'of/a,concrete drain, t0.,d0 away with the stagnant creek, at the eastern end of the borough. The outlet of the drain is. at Bell's Baf&s, and it is intended to complete th&tW-ork up to the sources of. the creek| work; has gone a 4? (fj^tance ; : ■ .and at the 'present rate of progress should be completed at an early date. The council is employing. its own men op the job, under the supervision of the foreman,'Mr W. Winter. at? this end of the township are very thankful to see the last of the creek, as the odour from it in hot weather was 'extremely unhealthy and obnoxious. The. lifeboats at Sumner have been left, for the time being, in the charge of the local brigade, by the Harbour Board. On Saturday last it was eyid- .-■» ent that members of the brigade are taking the same earnest interest, in their trust, as a working party was to be seen busily engaged in cleaning and * polishing the '' Another •job carried out was the sweeping off tifS pier Of the 'debris left by* the fishermen during the week. Hills in popularity. Well graded roads serve these sites, and the view from the summit' is magnificent. At present, , there are four residences erected and occupied, and the foundations for several more have been, laid down; The hill is already connected with the local high-pressure water supply, 'and it is quite on the cards that the gas will be extended there shortly. A It has been reported by' several residents that youths using a certain evening car are in the habit of using most objectionable language. It should serve as a warping to these lads that their names are known, and any further repitition of this abominable practice will result in their being reported to the police. ■
