In the Supreme Court to-day, before the Chief Justice, George Sutherland, late town clerk of Taihape, was charged with the following offences: —On or about April 14, 1913, at Taihape, stealing the sum of £l4 from his employers; on April 14, 1913, with intent- to de-. fraud, omitting material particulars from the bpoks of the said corporation, to wit, an entry in such books crediting Alfred' William Bicinell with having paid, on behalf of the, corporation, the sum of £l4; on off about May 3, of Stealing £5 l/10 ! from ; the* corporation^'/'oh the same date, with intent to; defraud, omitting to. make an in.the corporation's books crediting one David Wilkie with haying'paid to him on behalf of the corporation £5 1/10; on or' about May 3; 1913, stealing £ll fromthe corporation; on the same date, with intent to defraud, omitting to make ah entry in the books, crediting the Manawatu Timber Company, Ltd., with having paid to him, on behalf of the corporation, the sum of £11; on /divers dates between February 6, 1913, and r January 30, 1914, stealing the sum of £352 18/5 from the said corporation. '. Accused stated that he had been towir clerk since 1906, and duritag the last two years had been in-receipt of £3OO per annum. Till 1909 he had all the work of the office to transact. The work had increased of late. In addition to the office duties he was supervising engineer of several borough works, and was ret.urning-officer, and prepared the electoral trolls.
