THE LIFEBOAT QUESTION

ordinary meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held last' evening when there were present the Mayor

(Mr G. W. C. Smithson) and Councillors T. B. Boulton, T. G. Wood, C. A. C. Preston, S. M. Stuart, E. A. B. Rankin and the Hon J. Barr. The Works Committee in their' report recommended that Mr E. Ci. Rawnsley be granted permission to open the Scarborough Park fence and take stone*, provided that he pays a royalty of 6d per yard for stone and the fence be reinstated to the satisfaction of the council. They also recommended that the .council should execute the plan and memorandum of transfer of the Belle Yue easements. The report was adopted.

The Finance Committee in their'report stated that the receipts since last .statement amounted to £sl lis (id, the expenditure to £425 Os 4d, aiid there was a debit balance on the .District Fund account of £2Bl 15s lOd. The report was adopted. Accounts amounting to £207 18s Id were passed for payment. The Telegraph Department Avrote granting the council permission to place bracket street lamps on the telegiaph poles at the junction of »Main Road and Cave Terrace Road, and near the junction of the Main South Road and Cliff Street; the lamps to be removed at any time if so required by the Department.

A letter was received from Mr 11. W. Friedman asking permission to fence in part of Monck's Bay Spur Road. It was decided to hold the matter over for a time.

The Lyttelton Harbour Board wrote stating that the signal station and look-out at the Cave Rock had been done away with and the services of the pilot in charge of the station and lifeboats had been discontinued. The board also asked whe.ther it was the intention of the council to accept tho board's offer of the lifeboats as contained in its letter of Marefe 10 Inst, stating that if the offer was not ae-

ccpted the lifeboats would be removed. The council went into committee to deal with the matter.

The Hon F. M. B. Fisher telegraphed stating that he would be in Wellington on Thursday next, and would look into the matter of signal station and life 1 boats. On - the following Monday he would be in Christchurch and would then be in a position to advise the council of any action proposed to be taken. The matter was dealt with in committee.
