t ; Addressing the Auckland "No-license Convention thi&, the Bev. J. Dawson, secretary of: the New Zealand Alliance, urged tliat sever ral drastic alterations in the licensing laws should be included in the legislative programme of the Convention, and that the workers should press for the deletion of clause 18 in the 1910 Act, which required four years' delay after national, prohibition had been carried. He suggested that sis months was all the time really necessary. He .advocated that the term bar or public bar in section 4 of the Act should be so defined as to limit the sale of intoxicating liquor to one place opening tfulP on to the street. The law should be amended so as to make the closing hour six o'clock on fived&ys ofthe week instead of tea,,and tone o'clock on the half-holiday. They should agitate for the entire abolition of barmaids and of licenses for river-boats. The sale of . wine -should-tbe confined to licensed per-, sons, and wine makers should only be aHowejd to sell to licensed persons. The Convention should press for the imposition of imprisonment iihe. : (©potion- of a fine as- the punishment for sly grog-selling. , The speaker urged a;' legislative, amendment so that a proclaimed area, which practically meant the. King Country, should be brought into line with no-license districts under section 3? of the Act. Thiß would prevent the laying in of liquor to be drunk by companies of men. .... The Convention adopted ;a, resolution demanding the majority on all polls on (liquor qfiLje'stions, and urging that national "prohibition should come into force on June 30 succeeding the poll at wiiich it is carried.
