ON THE LAWN.

| THE FEMININE OUTLOOK. The following appeared in our special sporting edition of yesterday:— Somebody once wrote that ''Proud pied April, dressed in all its trim, had put a spirit of youth in everything." It was not written of a New Zealand April, but it fitted very well to-day nevertheless. Bright autumn weather, beautiful gowns, velvet-smooth lawns, and gay music combined to make the scene at the Riccarton racecourse a most delightful one, and the spirit of youth and gaiety, of which the poet sings, was abroad in all its glory. Winners and losers alike seemed to enjoy themselves immensely. New/Zealand ladies must | be as sports-loving as their husbands and brothers, to judge by the- numbers j in which they attended, the keen interest they took in the racing, and the J fervour with which they cheered their favourite gee-gees on to victory. Frocking was mostly of the tailored variety, but the summery conditions j would have made light gowns quite permissible. Here and there one was seen, but they were greatly in the minority. Hats were small and elose-fitting, and fashioned of every variety and colour in velvet. There was a sprinkling of fur hats and toques, and others of tagel or straw in larger effects. Amongst the ladies present were noticed the following:—Mrs A. E. G. Rhodes, in a nattier blue moire, showing waistcoat effect of black satin, black fox furs, blue hat trimmed with black bear.
